ANTIOXIDANTS: What they do and why do they play a pivotal role in skincare?

21/05/2021 /
Our skin cells naturally produce free radicals, highly reactive molecules which can damage our cells by triggering a process called oxidative stress. Free radicals can also come from external sources, such as pollution, stress, sun exposure, toxins, tobacco smoke, age, and poor nutrition.

While our skin is naturally equipped with antioxidants to combat free radicals, it is not always capable of neutralizing them, especially if we’re exposed to multiple triggers.

This results in collagen breakdown, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and dull skin.

Antioxidants have the ability to bind with free radicals to create stabilized atoms, consequently preventing damages. The topical use of antioxidants has also been shown to intervene in the oxidative process, preventing, limiting, and even reversing some damages.

There are thousands of different substances which can act as antioxidants. Vit. A, C, E, carotenoids, coq10, lipoic acid, phenols, polyphenols, resveratrol, glutathione are just a few examples.*

The ORAC value indicates how much a substance can neutralize free radicals

Not all antioxidants are created equal though, which is why at INARI Arctic Beauty, we have been on a mission to source high-quality, stable, and efficient ingredients with outstanding antioxidant properties. We also follow the ORAC lab test guideline: ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is so far the lab test reference when it comes to measuring the “total antioxidant capacity” rather than just the specific nutrients of an ingredient. This test also manages to capture synergies between different compounds.

One of our Arctic plant ingredients – the Chaga mushroom growing on birch trees in the coldest areas of Europe – has shown one of the highest ORAC values of 52,000 to 146,000. Numerous unique antioxidant compounds in plants have yet to be discovered, so the research is never-ending.

Arctic plants are showing exceptional properties providing maximized benefits for the skin

Our ingredients are mostly sourced from the Arctic Circle. Research has revealed the exceptional properties of plants growing under harsh and challenging conditions, such as in the Arctic Circle, stating a higher percentage of active ingredients than those coming from milder areas, thus becoming ultra-resilient and nutrient-dense. To maximize the benefits of these antioxidants, we have developed our unique synergistic complex by combining complementary plants.

A total of 6 antioxidant-rich plants have been selected for our Arctic Botanical Complex. This active blend is found in the entire INARI Arctic Beauty product line and boasts a high degree of highly effective, natural cell protection.

It counteracts the skin ageing process, delivers intensive hydration, and strengthens the skin barrier.
